About Nelson Valente

Conductor | Percussionist | Music Educator | Cultural Entrepreneur

Nelson Valente is a Portuguese-born conductor, percussionist, music educator, and cultural entrepreneur whose artistic trajectory is defined by clarity of expression, stylistic versatility, and a deeply collaborative musical presence. With conducting engagements across Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Romania, Serbia, Portugal, and the United States, he has built a reputation for delivering precise, emotionally resonant interpretations across a broad repertoire – from Gregorian chant to contemporary orchestral works.

Described by Prof. Florian Ziemen as a “particularly charming conductor with strong communication on the podium” and praised for his artistic integrity and natural kindness, Nelson brings an elegant balance of discipline and warmth to every rehearsal and performance. His gestures are both refined and communicative, shaped by years of musical study and reinforced by an expansive international performance career.

In 2024, Nelson completed his Diploma of Advanced Studies in Orchestra Conducting at the Hochschule der Künste Bern under the mentorship of Prof. Florian Ziemen. That same year, he began postgraduate studies in Orchestra Conducting at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste with Professors Christoph-Mathias Mueller and Iwan Wassilevsky. These academic paths further deepened his command of the orchestral craft and opened doors to important new collaborations in Switzerland and beyond.

As a conductor, Nelson has worked with a variety of professional orchestras including the Sinfonieorchester Biel/Solothurn, Baden-Baden Philharmonie Orchestra, Bucharest Symphony Orchestra, Dedalo Ensemble, New Trinity Baroque Orchestra, and Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras. His artistic development has been shaped by his participation in numerous prestigious masterclasses with conductors such as Donald Schleicher, Lawrence Golan, Dimitry Sitkovetsky, Vittorio Parisi, John Axelrod, Antonello Allemandi, Kaspar Zehnder, Dominique Roggen, and many others.

He has been a finalist and participant in several international conducting competitions, including the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra Conducting Competition (2025), Felix Mendelssohn Conducting Competition (2024), Dedalo Ensemble Contemporary Music Conducting Competition (2023), International Conducting Competition “City of Milan” (2023), Bucharest Symphony Conducting Competition (2024), Erich Bergel Conducting Competition (2022), and Lake Como Conducting Competition (2022). These opportunities have furthered his interpretative insight, ensemble leadership, and global network.

In 2024, Nelson was selected as assistant conductor to Predrag Gosta and Nicolas Clapton in Handel’s Rinaldo, a major production with the Belgrade Baroque Academy and New Trinity Baroque Orchestra. His fascination with opera continues to grow, especially within the works of Mozart, Bizet, Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, and Richard Strauss. His symphonic repertoire spans from Monteverdi to Murail and reflects his ability to navigate different stylistic languages with sensitivity and clarity.

In parallel to his conducting career, Nelson has remained a committed music educator for over two decades. Since relocating to Switzerland in 2018, he has taught at the public school level in Canton Valais and Lausanne, designing and delivering curriculum that bridges classical training with contemporary pedagogical approaches. He previously taught in Portugal under the Ministry of Education, where his students regularly achieved top results in national competitions. His approach integrates theory, instrumental instruction, digital tools, and ensemble work — aiming to foster not only technical proficiency but also a lifelong love for music.

Nelson is currently exploring new educational initiatives and long-term artistic projects, including the early development of a festival in Switzerland. This platform is envisioned as a place of exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration, with an emphasis on mentorship and artistic excellence.

He holds a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Orchestra Conducting (DAS – Hochschule der Künste Bern), a School Teacher Certification (HEP Coimbra), and a Diploma in Music Performance (EPM Espinho, Percussion with Miquel Bernat). He pursued advanced studies in Piano Pedagogy at ISEIT Instituto Piaget in Portugal. His early training included piano with Carlos Graciano and organ with Helena Moreira. He also trained as a ballet accompanist and orchestral percussionist, performing widely before transitioning into conducting.

Fluent in six languages — Portuguese, English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian — Nelson thrives in intercultural environments and is committed to building bridges across communities through music. He is currently based in Sion, in the Swiss canton of Valais.
